Road-Rage Still a Factor in Causing Texas Car Accidents

When people think about the reasons that a car accident happens, they might think of a driver not seeing another vehicle before making a lane change, or maybe someone getting rear-ended by a distracted driver. Most would not think that other drivers would purposefully cause an accident or have any intention of injuring another motorist.

However, a recent report by the San Antonio Express-News took a closer look at the number of car accidents caused by road-rage incidents from 2007 to 2011. The report compiled the number of accidents, injuries and deaths caused by drivers who had altercations with another driver.

Bexar County had the most road-rage caused accidents, with 680 crashes. These crashes resulted in 280 injuries as well as 2 deaths. Harris County was second on the list with 596 accidents. Austin also appeared on the list, with Travis County in fifth place with 195 crashes causing 145 injuries.

When reviewing these numbers, it was determined that some counties more actively pursue drivers who demonstrate aggressive driving behaviors. They conduct stings and issue traffic tickets for behaviors like following too closely or speeding to catch up with another driver.

Not surprisingly, many of these crashes are happening during rush hour, with 25 percent of all the road rage accidents happening between the hours of 4 and 7 p.m. When highways are crowded and traffic is at a standstill, drivers may become impatient. This may lead to unsafe driving behaviors that other motorists may feel is jeopardizing their safety.

Officials are considering ways to reduce the numbers of these accidents. The increased police response is one method that Bexar County is using, but stronger laws may be put in place that enhance the penalties for drivers causing the crashes.
