Sweep Checks Truck Drivers for Alcohol or Drug Problems

Anyone driving in Austin shares the road with semis on a daily basis. With so much traffic, drivers have to rely on one another to pay attention while behind the wheel. Any distractions or impairment could result in a dangerous trucking accident.

Officials with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), the agency responsible for regulating the trucking industry, recently conducted a sting operation that was focused on finding truck drivers that were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The nationwide sweep resulted in 287 bus and truck drivers being ordered off the road. In addition, 128 companies may also be penalized for employing these drivers. Truck drivers were stopped by investigators who would examine the driver's records to determine if they had any drug or alcohol issues.

One of the reasons that officials conduct this operation each year is to cut down on the number of drivers that switch companies to escape potential penalties or reporting requirements. Drivers may know about a certain test coming up, and know that they would fail such a test. They leave their current employer and move to a different trucking company that will allow them to be on the road.

Regulators are taking steps to try to limit the number of drivers and trucking companies employing these practices. If these practices are detected by officials, both the driver and the employer may be facing significant sanctions, including being forced off the road.

The FMCSA has released many new rules over the past two years in an effort to put safer truck drivers behind the wheel of safer trucks. There are strong penalties in place for individuals and organizations that do not follow these rules.
