Report on Fatal Accidents Caused by Drunk Drivers Released

Every time there is a motor vehicle accident caused by a drunk driver, motorists are reminded of the serious consequences that may result. Many states have passed aggressive laws that punish those driving under the influence in an effort to keep drunk drivers off of the roads. For commercial drivers, these penalties are much more severe.

Whenever there is a fatal trucking or car accident, officials perform an extensive investigation to learn what went wrong. Often, this will lead to new rules, such as when texting was banned after a series of deadly trucking accidents.

A new report recently issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTHSA) examined alcohol-impaired fatal accidents in 2010. The report looked at both passenger vehicles as well as commercial vehicles, such as 18-wheelers.

In instances where a fatal crash involved alcohol, the report revealed that 70 percent of all drivers - both passenger and commercial vehicles - had blood-alcohol content levels that were substantially higher than the 0.08 level for intoxication.

For truckers, only three percent of fatal accidents were caused by drivers that had some amount of alcohol in their blood. This was the lowest amount of any group studied in the survey. Motorcyclists had the highest percentage of fatalities caused by intoxicated drivers, with at least 17 percent of the deaths caused in motorcycle accidents involving a driver with a blood-alcohol content above 0.15.

Officials are planning to crackdown on drunk driving during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, but motorists need to exercise care when on roadways. While these crashes can be easily prevented, people are still getting behind the wheel after having too much to drink.
