100 car pileup in Texas results in two fatalities

The 100 car pileup on Interstate 10 in Texas has left many wondering if it could have been prevented. Two people were killed and an estimated 120 people were injured on Thanksgiving after a multiple-car accident on the major interstate led to several chain-reaction crashes.

The first multi-car accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Beaumont on Thanksgiving morning. Due to the dense fog on the highway, chain-reaction crashes happened after the first accident. The Texas Highway Patrol said that the dense fog was probably a main contributing factor in the crashes but they are still investigating.

The two fatalities occurred after their car was hit from behind by an 18-wheeler, the Department of Public Safety said. The victims were the driver and passenger in the vehicle hit from behind. In addition to the two fatalities, there were an estimate 120 people injured though the state highway patrol said it is still unknown how many injuries resulted from the accidents.

News coverage of the multi-vehicle accident showed mangled vehicles on top of another as well as injured people sitting in the grass by the highway waiting for medical attention. A long line of vehicles and commercial trucks were seen lined up along the highway. The highway patrol said that many different types of vehicles were involved in the accident, including cars, minivans, pickups, tractor-trailer trucks and one FedEx truck.

The Texas Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the accidents and what role weather and foggy conditions played in the pileup.

Multi-vehicle accidents can be difficult when working with car insurance companies and when seeking compensation for injuries and medical treatment. Individuals involved in multi-vehicle accidents should consult a personal injury attorney to discuss their specific case and see what options are available for compensation for injuries and a new vehicle.
