Gender, age and day impact risk of being in a fatal car accident

Car accidents are a threat to everyone on the road in Texas. Fatal car accidents have decreased in the last few years, but federal agencies reported that roughly 32,000 people in the U.S. died from car accidents in 2011, which is still a significantly high number of people dying from car accidents every year.

Many news reports have focused on how dangerous distracted driving has been for Americans. Despite the increased awareness of unsafe driving behaviors, these accidents continue to happen and not all of them are caused by the use of electronics. While everyone is at risk for being involved in a car accident, there are some factors that increase the chances of being seriously injured or killed in a car accident.

What are the main causes of fatal car accidents in the U.S.? When are fatal car accidents most likely to happen and who are often the victims of these crashes? Below is a list of statistics based off of recent federal reports identifying the contributing factors for fatal accidents as well as who is most likely to be killed and when.

The main causes of fatal car accidents are:

  • One-third of all fatal car accidents were caused by speeding.
  • Drunk driving and drugged driving accidents cause one-fifth of all fatal car accidents.
  • Distracted driving causes 15 fatal accidents every day in the U.S.
  • Unlicensed drivers are almost three times more likely to cause a fatal accident.

Gender and age plays a role in who is more likely to be killed in a car accident:

  • 70 percent of all fatal car accidents victims were men.
  • When a male and female are both in the car and it crashes, the female is more likely to die.
  • Motorcyclists accounted for 13 percent of all car accident fatalities in 2010.
  • 48 percent of all teen fatalities in the U.S. were caused by car accidents.
  • Two out of three teens killed in car accidents were male.

Fatal car accidents are most likely to occur:

  • 50 percent of all fatal car crashes happen on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
  • July reported the most fatal car accidents of any month.
