Texas bill wants to stop 'unsafe' used tires from being sold

A proposed bill in Texas aims to protect drivers from buying unsafe used tires, offering more protection for all drivers on the road. The proposed bill would regulate used tire sales in Texas and make it a Class A misdemeanor to sell "unsafe" used tires to the public.

Selling "unsafe" used tires could result in a fine up to $4,000 or one year in prison, or both, according to the penal code. The bill was proposed to protect people from buying unsafe tires at a cheaper cost that may put the driver's safety at risk, as well as other drivers on the road. Supporters of the bill say that it is common sense and it will help prevent car accidents caused by unsafe tires.

Millions of used tires for cars and light trucks are sold every year and many used tires may be unsafe to have on your vehicle. There are several different ways tires can be considered unsafe. How does the proposed bill decide which tires are unsafe?

The bill says that tires will be defined as "unsafe" if they have a tread depth less than 1/16 inch, has visible bumps or knots, has exposed tire cords or belts, has repairs in certain areas, has a puncture not properly repaired or large than ¼ inch, has been listed in a safety recall or does not have a Department of Transportation identification number.

Supporters of the bill say that these regulations will protect the public from purchasing unsafe and dangerous tires. They said it will also level the field for companies that sell used tires because they will all have to follow the same regulations on safety and storage.

If the bill is passed, safety advocates hope that Texas drivers will be protected from having unsafe tires on their vehicles but they say more work may need to done to make sure older vehicles with unsafe tires are kept off the roads too.
