Work zones increase chances of car accidents in Texas

As the weather warms up, people in Texas know that road construction will soon follow. Many highways and roads in Texas see road construction every year and unfortunately, more car accidents are usually reported on these roads.

Road construction can create safety hazards for drivers and construction workers in Texas. Many road construction sites have detours and require drivers to slow down and follow the signs telling them where to go. While many people drive safely in construction zones, some don't follow safety precautions in these work zones and end up being in a car accident.

Car accidents can be very dangerous to begin with. When accidents happen in construction zones, the dangers increase for drivers and workers. While workers in construction zones are at risk to be injured, reports show that most work zone accidents involve motorists. Motorists need to take the appropriate safety precautions while driving through work zones to keep themselves and everyone else on the road safe.

The Texas Department of Transportation offers the following safety tips for motorists driving through construction zones:

  • Slow down
  • Observe traffic signs
  • Be alert and be patient

One of the most common types of accidents that occur in construction zones are rear-end collisions because drivers are not aware that traffic slowed down or stopped before it is too late. These accidents can be prevented by paying attention to the vehicle in front of you and your surroundings. It is also important for leave plenty of space between vehicles to make sure there is enough time to safely brake if needed.

The Texas DOT said that car accidents in work zones are preventable if drivers pay attention and make an effort to drive safely. People driving through construction zones need to make a conscious effort to drive cautiously and safely because there are many more hazards on the road.
