Texas police: Distracted drivers average 3 accidents a month

Distracted driving is a serious problem that seems to be increasing across Texas and the rest of the nation. Actions like talking on cell phones or texting while driving can lead to car accidents and serious injuries for innocent people on our state's roadways. Since distracted driving is completely preventable, it can seem tragic when someone is harmed in this type of collision. When the distracted drivers turn out to be police officers, however, it can seem particularly outrageous.

After all, most of us expect the police to serve and protect us -- and the majority of them do just that. But, considering that more and more Texas officers are expected to utilize a wide array of technological gadgets like on-board computers and smart phones while patrolling in their vehicles, it's no wonder that car accidents involving distracted police offers are on the rise. Statistics gathered over the past couple of years show that distracted police drivers have gotten into three accidents each month, on average.

One Texas city's mayor claims that he isn't particularly worried about the dangers of distracted driving by the officers in his jurisdiction. According to him, his officers are 'above the fray' and 'well trained' enough to be able to perform their duties, even when driving while distracted. Unfortunately, however, the officers in that city have gotten into at least three car accidents over the past several years. While few would doubt the dedication that most law enforcement officials have for their jobs, distracted driving can result in tragic consequences, no matter how well trained an individual may be. It only takes an instant for someone's life to be changed forever -- or even ended.

Those who have been injured by distracted drivers causing car accidents, or who have lost a loved one in such a collision, may be able to utilize Texas state personal injury laws to their benefit. By filing a civil lawsuit alleging personal injury or wrongful death, they may be able to obtain monetary damages helping with the costs they have incurred. While it won't bring back a loved one or restore their physical well-being, it can often take away the financial strain and serve as a warning to others that distracted driving can hurt or even kill.
