Distracted drivers causing increased amounts of crashes in Texas

In the last two years, Texas has seen the amount of accidents ending in injury or fatality increase pretty dramatically. This bothersome trend has the Texas Insurance Council reviewing numbers and causes to identify the problem. While there are many reasons for these accidents, distracted drivers seem to be one of the biggest overall causes.

In 2013, a total of 153,000 auto accidents were reported that resulted in fatality or injury. That is an increase of 14,000 accidents in a two-year period, when comparing numbers from 2011, which reportedly had 139,000 accidents with the same result. Before this rise in traffic accidents, the numbers had actually been slowly decreasing for decades. So why the change?

While a good chunk of these accidents were the result of traffic congestion, DUI and/or speeding; distracted driving is becoming an increasingly significant problem. Cell phones or other electronic devices are commonplace in today's society; unfortunately, this translates to people using them when behind the wheel. Even with laws to enforce limited use of these devices while driving, far too many people still choose to use them.

Distracted drivers are everywhere, and these drivers can cause significant harm, not only to themselves, but to others as well. Those who have been injured or lost a loved one in an accident caused by a distracted driver could pursue civil claims against the driver thought to be responsible for any damages done. A Texas civil court could award these victims, or their families, financial compensation for the financial losses they have sustained and for any pain and suffering they have endured.
