I was injured in a bicycle accident in Texas, now what?

Accidents between bicycles and automobiles occur on an almost daily basis in Texas. Even if a biker is wearing protective gear, a bicycle accident like this often results in serious injuries. As many Texans take to biking, either for recreation or as their primary mode of transportation, more is being done to offer these individuals protection.

Cities statewide are installing bike lanes and adopting laws that are meant to protect bicyclists. In Austin, a law was passed that states motorists are to leave at least three feet between their vehicles and bicycle riders. This distance increases to six feet if the passing vehicle is a semi or other commercial vehicle. Along with this buffer zone, motorists are prohibited from using bike lanes.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of city and state officials, these accidents are still very much a reality and both children and adults are at risk. Whether a bike lane is present or not, drivers and bikers are required to look out for each other and safely share the road. This applies in both residential areas and on city streets. Some drivers may try to place the blame on the victim in these incidents. If this happens, different legal strategies can be utilized to demonstrate negligence on the driver’s part — some of which can be viewed on our Austin Bicycle Accident Attorneys page.

The road to recovery can be difficult, expensive and most certainly something that should not have to be shouldered alone. If you have been injured in a bicycle accident, you may be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim against the individual believed to be responsible. An experienced attorney in Texas, who specializes in accidents such as this, can provide valuable insight to your legal rights and protections, while at the same time working toward a financial settlement that would provide adequate compensation for the damages encountered.
