Texas truck accident: details, big and small, matter

After a crash it can be difficult for a victim and/or his or her loved ones to be in a solid state of mind. When a car or truck accident occurs, everything may seem to be one big blur. As hard as it may be, though, the details of the incident -- both big and small -- are important, and will be of vital importance if legal claims are to be filed in a Texas civil court.

Collisions involving big rigs are more common than most would like to believe. The sheer size and weight of these vehicles can cause serious damage with minimal effort, often leaving victims with significant, or even fatal, injuries. After an accident has occurred, it is not uncommon for the victim or -- in the event of fatality -- his or her family members to question liability. This is where details truly do matter.

So, what details should one document after an accident? This list is actually fairly extensive, but there are some basic items that can help with the investigative process. These include:

  • Information about the truck driver and his or her employer
  • Date, time and location of the incident
  • Names of witnesses
  • Specifics about any resulting medical treatments
  • Documented financial losses

The chaos that seems to ensue after a truck accident can make it difficult to get a lot of this information. It is possible to gain access to police reports in Texas, though, which would have some of these very specific details. At the end of the day, a person who has been injured or lost a loved one in an accident with a larger commercial vehicle has every right to question the incident and to seek compensation for his or her losses if he or she believes liability lies with the truck driver or that individual's employer. The details of these cases will matter and can help victims or -- in the event of fatality -- their family members successfully establish negligence in court.
