Texas truck accident: will weight limits be changed?

The number of truck accidents seen in Texas and across the country is somewhat frightening, as numerous individuals are injured or killed in such tragedies. Various things are considered when a truck accident occurs, such as the vehicle's weight and cargo securement issues. The weight of commercial vehicles alone is believed to a major public safety concern. Federal guidelines restricting vehicle weight have been set, but changes are currently being considered.

Increasing the amount of weight certain carriers are allowed to haul may be good from a commercial standpoint, but there is cause for concern for safety's sake. A truck's weight does impact, how a driver will be able to maneuver the vehicle. The heavier the truck, the more time it will need to stop in order to avoid an accident.

A study recently concluded on this subject, but since the results were inconclusive the U.S. Department of Transportation has stated that it will not suggest a weight increase at this time. Apparently the study, which looked at trucking accidents, failed to provide sufficient information regarding the size and weight of the commercial vehicles involved in such incidents. Until a more in depth study is performed, it has not been recommended that weight restrictions be altered.

When a truck accident occurs, if a vehicle is overloaded or the appropriate number of tie downs have not been utilized for the load, the outcome can be disastrous. Those in Texas who have been injured or lost loved ones in accidents with commercial haulers may seek damages through legal means. Civil claims may be filed against drivers and/or their employers in an effort to seek compensation.
