Distracted drivers continue to cause fatal wrecks in Texas

Despite increasingly stringent laws that aim to decrease the number of car wrecks attributed to distracted drivers, accidents seem to be increasing. There are many reasons why people can become distracted while driving, though gadgets and technology seem to be the worst culprits. Teenagers and new drivers are especially susceptible to being distracted drivers. A recent tragic car accident attributed to distracted driving in Texas claimed the lives of three teenagers.

According to police, four teenagers were driving home from spring break on South Padre Island at 2 p.m. in late March. The car carrying the young women was traveling northbound on Highway 77 when the driver attempted to use her cell phone's GPS for navigation. As the car veered to the left, the driver over-corrected and collided with an 18-wheeler.

Two teenage girls in the back seat were wearing their seat belts, but were killed at the site of the crash. The two girls were sisters, and the only children in their immediate family. The teenage passenger of the car was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but passed away later that night. The driver was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Families of survivors facing similar car wrecks caused by distracted drivers should understand what legal options they can pursue, regardless of whether or not authorities choose to file criminal charges. They may be entitled to compensation for the wrongful death of a family member to help mitigate costs of medical expenses, funeral expenses and other bills. They may also be able to seek compensation for less tangible things such as the loss of companionship and pain and suffering. Seeking legal guidance from a lawyer familiar with the distracted driving laws in Texas can be helpful during such a painful and confusing time.
