Texas begins campaign to raise awareness of distracted drivers

Mid-spring marks the start of the busy season on America's roads and highways, which will result in a dramatic increase in the number of people traveling in the coming months. In addition, it is also the time of year that most states begin their road construction projects, which means new traffic patterns and potentially fewer travel lanes. With the added congestion, the threat of accidents due to distracted drivers increases as well.

The Texas Department of Transportation has designated April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in order to call attention to the dangers of engaging in any activity behind the wheel that may be distracting. According to a recent article, Texas had a record-breaking 102 traffic fatalities last year. Authorities attribute many of those fatalities to drivers diverting their attention from the road, and stress that this is NOT just while texting. Many wrecks are caused by drivers taking their eyes off the road for another reason, such as picking up a spilled drink, checking on a baby or trying to find the right song on their music device.

TxDOT also wants to call attention to distracted driving demographics. Crashes related to distracted drivers are most prevalent in young adults and teens ages 16 to 24, which is the segment with the least driving experience. Because of this, a significant portion of the campaign is focused on college campuses.

Despite campaigns to make people more aware, accidents will unfortunately continue to happen due to distracted drivers. Victims and/or their family members in Texas who have been involved in an accident could benefit from seeking the counsel of an attorney to discuss legal options. They may be able to seek reimbursement for medical bills, loss of income and pain and suffering due to an accident caused by distracted driving.
