Hundreds join event begun to honor Texas bicycle accident victim

An event that was started in 2003 to honor a cyclist who was hit and killed by a school bus has grown exponentially over the past years. The grassroots "Ride of Silence" event now includes people from all over the world. They ride on the same night to remember and raise awareness of those who have been killed or injured in a bicycle accident. Hundreds recently joined the ride in the Dallas, Texas area, where the first ride took place those many years ago.

The event began when a local Dallas cyclist was hit and killed by a bus. While mourning, one of his close friends sent an email to fellow riders in the area, asking them to join him on a ride to a local lake in memory of their friend. Due to the terse nature of the email and the anger over the senseless death of a friend, the first ride was made in a somber and silent manner.

Over the past 13 years, the Ride of Silence has grown to include people on every continent, including Antarctica. The organizers and participants of this event hope that each ride will continue to create awareness to drivers to pay attention and share the road with cyclists. They hope that this will help prevent future injuries and deaths to cyclists as their number steadily increases in communities throughout the nation and world.

Unfortunately, though awareness is increased and more care is taken by motorists to avoid hitting cyclists, accidents will continue to occur. Those in the Texas who have been impacted by a car-bicycle accident may benefit from discussing their situation with an attorney who focuses on personal injury and wrongful death litigation. Attorneys who have experience in this area will be able to discuss any available options a person can pursue if he or she wishes to seek reparations in a civil lawsuit due to a bicycle accident.
