Texas police officer charged with DWI in fiery fatal accident

Because of the speed and volume of traffic on America's highways, accidents that occur are often serious in nature. It is tragic when a fatal accident occurs, but it is even more so when it involves a police officer who has taken an oath and sworn to protect and defend the residents of Texas. A recent chain-reaction accident happened that was started by an intoxicated police officer and involved several vehicles and motorists.

According to Texas State Troopers who responded to the scene, the accident occurred on Interstate 35 at 2 a.m. on June 21. Witnesses report that a driver in a white sedan was seen swerving in and out of highway traffic when it suddenly hit a tractor-trailer from behind. The driver of the 18-wheeler exited his vehicle to see if he could render help to the driver of the sedan. At that time, another tractor-trailer hit debris from the wreck that caused the truck to hit the driver of the original big rig who was walking beside the road. This third vehicle then drove into a ditch beside the road and caught on fire.

A fourth tractor-trailer came upon the site of the wreck and also caught on fire after hitting debris on the road. The driver of the initially involved truck died at the scene, and the three other drivers were hospitalized with injuries from the accidents. The driver of the car who initially caused the accident is now in jail.

It was determined that the sedan driver was an off-duty police officer from El Paso. He has been charged with DWI and carrying a weapon unlawfully. Authorities are seeking to add charges relating to the death of the first truck driver. Technically, that accident was secondary and not specifically caused by the police officer, so those charges have yet to be filed.

One facing the fallout from a similar fatal accident in Texas could benefit from seeking the advice of an experienced personal injury attorney. An attorney who focuses on this type of litigation could best guide victims and surviving family members through this difficult time by discussing the legal options available to them. Many unexpected expenses can occur as a result of such a tragic wreck, such as medical bills, loss of family income due to missed wages, funeral expenses and other financial obligations. Consulting an attorney could help families mitigate these losses as expeditiously as possible.
