Fatal accident claims life of Texas teenager

There are few places generally more protected from speeders and distracted drivers than school zones. However, when parents are fixated on getting their children to school on time, they can become negligent in paying attention to the road and pedestrians. Recently, a fatal accident in Texas took the life of a high school senior as he was trying to cross a busy street in order to get to class.

According to investigators, the teen was attempting to cross the street from his parent's home to the school when he was struck. He made it across the two westbound lanes and paused in the middle turn lane while waiting for a break in the eastbound traffic. At that point, he was hit by a westbound driver in a truck who was trying to turn left into the school to drop her son off.

Upon impact, the 18-year-old was flung dozens of feet away. It is estimated that the truck that hit him was traveling between 35 and 40 mph, which could be almost double the 20-mph school zone. At this time, it is unknown if the school-zone sign warning lights were functioning.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a student death has occurred in the area. In early 2015, another student was walking to school and was fatally struck by a different pickup. Those in Texas who have faced a similar fatal accident may benefit from speaking with an experienced personal injury attorney. Attorneys who focus on this area of law will be in the best position to evaluate a client's position and discuss possible legal options to pursue.
