Texas cyclists ride to honor woman who died in bicycle accident

Though strides have been made to make America's roads safer for cyclists, riding can still be fraught with danger. Where there are no bicycle lanes present, drivers often find it difficult to judge the distance between their vehicles and a biker. Recently, a well-known Texas cyclist perished in a bicycle accident, and many of her peers participated in a memorial ride in her honor.

The accident occurred near Dawson, Texas on Wednesday, November 30. The 34-year-old cyclist was riding westbound on a local roadway, close to Highway 31. At approximately 5:30 p.m., she was hit by a pickup truck driven by a 48-year-old woman.

Though she was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, she died from the injuries she received in the crash. To honor her memory, several cyclists organized a 20-mile ride before attending her funeral. During the ride, the bicyclists also placed a "ghost bike" at her crash site. A ghost bike is generally a bicycle that has been painted white and placed by the roadside to memorialize a fallen rider, and to also remind auto drivers to watch for those cycling along the road.

Though it is unknown if the driver in this case has been issued criminal charges, the surviving loved ones of a person involved in a similar bicycle accident can rightfully pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver in civil court. This may allow them to seek reimbursement for medical bills and expenses that incur as a result of a fatal accident such as this tragedy. Families facing a similar bicycle accident in Texas often seek the counsel of a personal injury attorney. An attorney who is well-versed in local and state laws will be able to help guide the family in the pursuit of restitution and justice.
