One Texas lawmaker attempts to stop some distracted drivers again

Those in the legislative branch of government are charged with the responsibility to represent the will of the people who voted for them and to purportedly look out for the good of the public. Now, it has been reported that some Texas lawmakers will try once again to ban one behavior that leads to distracted drivers. Doing so could possibly help make the roads safer for everyone.

This will be the fourth attempt to push through a bill that addresses the dangers of using a cellular phone while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. While many states have already voted to make texting while driving illegal, Texas has yet to ban the activity throughout the state. Approximately 90 individual towns have taken steps to help protect its travelers by outlawing this dangerous behavior.

The bill has support from some who have seen the damage that texting and driving can cause. One former emergency responder stated that he had witnessed first hand the aftermath of crashes caused by these distracted drivers. According to the state Department of Transportation, an estimated 100,000 wrecks can be attributed to drivers not paying attention to the road.

Currently, the state only regulates texting and driving for bus drivers transporting minors, drivers within school zones and those who are underage. It is unclear if the proposed legislation will garner enough support this time to help protect travelers from at least some distracted drivers. Regardless of whether the bill passes, families who have been victims of a serious accident that was caused by another party can seek to file a personal injury civil suit as a way to recoup at least some of the monetary damages they have suffered.
