The effects from a whiplash injury in a car accident can linger

Almost everyone knows someone who has been injured in an accident. When the cause of the injury was a car accident, some may be tempted to dismiss the seriousness of a whiplash injury. However, as many Texas residents have had the misfortune of discovering, this type of injury can have a long lasting impact on one's health.

Whiplash is often portrayed in movies as a neck injury that requires a soft collar to be worn for a brief time and then discarded. However, the damage that is done at the moment of injury is often complex, and it may take weeks before more serious symptoms manifest. If the injury was the result of a car accident, then the whiplash injury occurs in four distinct phases in rapid succession. The sudden forceful extension and recoil of the neck and upper back muscles and soft tissues is when the most damage occurs.

The effects of these types of injuries are unique to each individual, but the majority of victims have several complaints in common. The first and most common is neck and shoulder pain. This is caused by the tearing and stretching of the ligaments, tendons and connective fibers and from vertebra being compressed. Headaches and jaw pain from temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) are two other prevalent symptoms caused by whiplash.

Some victims will experience lower back pain -- especially if the car accident was a side impact such as with a T-bone collision. All of these complaints can last for weeks or months. Some victims will endure pain from these injuries for the rest of their lives. Seeking quality care can make a difference, but this care is not inexpensive and may require months of specialized treatment. Texas residents who have been injured in a collision caused by the negligence of another party are entitled to file a personal injury claim in an effort to ensure their medical needs and financial losses are covered.
