Bicycle accident deaths down for some but up for others

Learning to ride a bicycle is one of the fondest memories from childhood for millions of people. However, along with that accomplishment comes the danger of getting seriously injured in a bicycle accident. Every year, these types of accidents affect the lives of dozens of Texas residents.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, approximately two percent of all fatal traffic accident victims are bicyclists. The latest figures regarding the fatality rates for these accidents reveal that for some, fatal incidents are down. However, the death rate for men over the age of 20 have shown a marked increase over the past several years. The numbers of fatal wrecks for women over the age of 20 and for children have gone down considerably.

For states that have passed helmet laws, serious and fatal collisions have also gone down, especially for riders under the age of 20. Studies have shown that the use of a helmet can reduce the risk of a fatal head injury by an estimated 50 percent. Helmets also can help prevent serious face and neck injuries in the event of a crash. Of the states that have passed laws requiring the use of protective head gear, the majority apply only to the younger riders and are not mandated for everyone; though, a few municipalities have passed ordinances that apply to riders of all ages.

Statistics show that for those who use helmets, the death rate is an estimated 17 percent. In light of the fact that 817 riders died in 2015, the need for those who ride to take proactive steps to protect themselves makes sense and could possibly save lives. Unfortunately, many of these collisions are caused by other motorists. A bicycle accident can have life long repercussions -- especially if the victim suffered a serious head or spinal injury. Texas families whose lives have been forever altered by these types of injuries through the actions or negligence of another party may seek compensation for their monetary damages through the successful filing of a personal injury claim.
