Insurer offers tips to help prevent a Texas motorcycle accident

According to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, only 20 percent of wrecks involving a motorcycle do not result in a serious injury or death. With these riders facing such high risks, State Farm Insurance company has offered some suggestions to help customers avoid a serious motorcycle accident. While most Texas riders are aware these, it may be beneficial to review them occasionally.

Two of the most repeated suggestions are to wear protective gear in bright colors. While the summer months may lend themselves to light, comfortable clothing, motorcyclists are best served by donning thicker outer garments, such as leather, in order to protect against road rash and other serious skin injuries. It is also suggested that helmets are in the style that incorporate full facial protection in a brighter, more noticeable color.

Some other tips included being extra vigilant around fellow motorists, especially since so many of them are often distracted and not fully attentive to their driving. A vast majority of accidents involve a vehicle making a left turn into the path of oncoming cyclists, so extra vigilance at intersections may prove to be a life saver. Along with the above suggestions, ensuring that one is experienced in handling inclement weather and engaging in defensive and safe driving habits may enable one to return safely from his or her next outing along the Texas freeways.

The majority of these types of crashes are the fault of other motorists. Even when a rider takes all of the recommended precautions and keeps up on all of the safe driving skills, a serious motorcycle accident can happen without warning. Because a rider has relatively little protection in the event of a serious collision, it is likely that one will suffer serious -- if not life-threatening -- injuries. Even when one is expected to make a full recovery eventually, the damage done to one's finances may be devastating. A successful personal injury claim filed against the responsible parties may result in compensation that can ease those monetary burdens.
