Suspected drunk driving results in fatal accident

Driving is a privilege, not a right. When a person gets behind the wheel of a car, he or she bears a great responsibility to pay close attention to the task at hand. This can only happen when the driver has a clear head, free from drugs or alcohol, and distractions are minimal. However, not everyone adheres to these rules, and sometimes the results are tragic. Sadly, such was the case recently when a fatal accident occurred at a Texas intersection.

The incident happened very late one evening in Houston when a 34-year-old man left a local sports bar and decided to drive his pickup truck to his brother's home, supposedly to continue drinking. The man apparently admitted to drinking a dozen beers while at the bar. A man in a nearby vehicle reported noticing the pickup swerving out of its lane. According to witnesses, as the pickup approached a red light, the driver allegedly did not show signs of braking and blew through the intersection, T-boning another vehicle.

All four occupants of the other vehicle were injured in the accident. A teenager and two adults endured less serious injuries, but a 5-year-old girl suffered a serious brain injury, resulting in the need for emergency surgery. One week following the accident, the girl succumbed to her injuries. Initially, the pickup driver was charged with intoxication assault and subsequently released on bail. However, following the girl's death, authorities upped the charge to intoxication manslaughter.

This driver made a poor choice, and if convicted, he could be facing many years in prison. Worse, now a family is faced with the loss of a child, which most people would agree is the most tragic of all possible outcomes. If it is found that this man's negligence caused this fatal accident, the survivors have the right to pursue the matter in Texas civil court. While nothing can bring a loved one back, a successfully litigated wrongful death lawsuit could alleviate some of the unexpected expenses that tend to occur at such times.
