Hit-and-run accidents often involve fatalities

Unfortunately, anyone's life can change or end in a split second, and sometimes all it takes is one person who uses poor judgment or is simply momentarily distracted to cause a tragedy. When such an event happens, the person seemingly responsible may initially panic and remove him or herself quickly from the situation, and this is how hit-and-run accidents happen. This seems to be the case in a recent accident in which three young men were killed on a Texas highway while they were on the roadside trying to change a flat tire.

The incident happened early on a recent Sunday morning in Dallas. According to one victim's family, the three men, all in their early 20s, were traveling back from attending a concert with a group of friends when their SUV had a flat tire. While they were on the side of the road changing the tire, a man in a truck struck and killed all three and injured two other passengers inside the SUV. The driver then fled the scene, leaving behind his injured 12-year-old son in his truck.

Police continue to search for the man who fled from the accident. His son was taken to a local hospital. The two people inside the SUV were also transported to hospital, one with severe injuries. Police have said that when the truck driver is found, he will face charges of manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

Three families are now suffering an enormous loss, and the surviving victims are likely enduring pain as well, both physically and emotionally. Following any accident, victims and their families typically feel some anger toward the person responsible, but in the case of hit-and-run accidents, that anger may be compounded. When this man is found, he will have to deal with criminal charges, but the victims' families may also consider pursuing the matter in Texas civil court. A knowledgeable personal injury attorney can discuss legal options, and if successful, such a lawsuit could help mitigate unexpected expenses these families may be encountering.
