Supreme Court justice injured in biking accident

Each day, bicyclists end up suffering accidents and injuries because of the negligence of others on the road. The results of these incidents range from broken bones and scratches to fatal injuries.

Recently, Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer of the United States Supreme Court suffered a bicycle accident in Washington, D.C. This particular incident was not the first bicycle accident the 74-year-old justice has suffered, although it was severe enough to require shoulder replacement surgery.

In the past, Justice Breyer has sustained many injuries while riding his bicycle, including a broken collarbone and broken ribs. He also sustained a punctured lung during a bike crash in 1993.

In the city of Austin, and in other parts of Texas, laws have been passed to protect bicyclists from the careless behavior of motorists. However, even with these laws in place, there are still many instances of children and adults getting hit by cars each month.

Unfortunately, many motorists fail to understand a need to share the road with those riding their bikes. Others continue to drive with negligence and demonstrate a lack of willingness to do simple tasks such as checking behind them before backing up, or even failing to stop at stop signs.

As Justice Breyer's case indicates, bicycle accidents can be devastating. Not only can they result in costly medical bills, but it can also result in lost time at work or school. Motorists are encouraged to be wary of those on bikes in an effort to avoid accidents at all costs. Likewise, bicyclists are encouraged to be aware of motor vehicles in an effort to avoid a crash.
